Ted Turner
Chairman, United Nations Foundation; Chairman, Turner Enterprises
Ted Turner is the Chairman of Turner Enterprises, Inc. and former Vice Chairma
n of Time Warner Inc., the world’s leading media company. He is the founder o
f CN*, an environmentalist, and a philanthropist. Turner created the UN Founda
tion in 1998 with his historic $1 billion gift in support of the United Nation
s. He has said that his gift is an “investment in the future of humanity.”
Timothy E. Wirth
President, United Nations Foundation and Better World Fund
Senator Wirth was chosen by Mr. Turner to run the UN Foundation because of his
extensive experience and knowledge of international issues, particularly the
environment and reproductive health. Senator Wirth spent more than 20 years in
the United States Congress, representing Colorado both in the House of Repres
entatives and the Senate, and served as Undersecretary of State for Global Aff
airs.
Kofi Annan
Former Secretary-General, United Nations
Kofi A. Annan of Ghana, the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, s
erved from 1997 to 2006 and was the first to emerge from the ranks of United N
ations staff. One of Mr. Annan’s main priorities as Secretary-General was a
comprehensive program of reform aimed at revitalizing the United Nations and m
aking the international system more effective. He was and continues to be a c
onstant advocate for human rights, the rule of law, the Millennium Development
Goals and Africa. Mr. Annan was awarded the 2001 Nobel Prize for Peace, join
tly with the United Nations.
Yuan Ming
Director, Institute of International Relations, Peking University
Professor Yuan Ming was originally trained as a student of western language an
d literature at Peking University. Since 1995, she has conducted research at t
he Carter Center in Atlanta, Georgia; the Carnegie Endowment for International
Peace and the Brookings Institution in Washington D.C. She is a frequent spea
ker at many international gatherings such as the World Economic Forum in Davos
, the Trilateral Commission and the Club of Rome.
Emma Rothschild
Director of the Centre for History and Economics at King’s College, Universit
y of Cambridge and Harvard University, and Professor of History at Harvard Uni
versity
In addition to her positions at Harvard and Cambridge, she has been a member o
f the United Kingdom government’s Council for Science and Technology, and of
the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution. From 1999 to 2005 she was cha
irman of the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development.
Muhammad Yunus
Founder, Grameen Bank of Bangladesh
Professor Muhammad Yunus, founder of the Grameen Movement and winner of the 20
06 Nobel Peace Prize, is responsible for many innovative programs benefiting t
he rural poor. He attended Vanderbilt University on a Fulbright Scholarship an
d received his Ph.D. in Economics in 1969. He taught briefly in the U.S. befor
e returning to his native Bangladesh, where he joined the Economics Department
at Chittagong University.
