More than two dozen African immigrants have drowned off the coast of Yemen after people smugglers forced them overboard.
The UN's refugee agency said on Wednesday the victims were being smuggled out of Somalia and across the Gulf of Aden when the incident occurred.
The bodies reportedly washed ashore near Wadi al-Barakin over the course of Tuesday.
Astrid van Genderen-Sort, spokeswoman for UNHCR, told Al Jazeera: "The smugglers got nervous, they thought they would be captured, so they pushed people overboard. They beat them, even some people got killed and other people drowned.
"At least 26 bodies have already been found and buried, and 20 are still missing. Seventy-four people made it ashore, and of course are completely traumatised."
She said the scale of the problem was "huge, and it has become huger and huger".
Around 26,000 people have arrived in Yemen so far this year, with more than 200 people dying en route, and another 225 others still missing, according to UN figures |
