A South African high court is due to rule on corruption charges brought against Jacob Zuma, president of the African National Congress (ANC).
Zuma has denied a number of charges, including money-laundering and corruption. The Pietermaritzburg court is due to decide on Friday whether or not to dismiss the case.
Supporters of Zuma, who is tipped to become the country's next president should the charges be dropped, gathered outside the court awaiting the ruling.
If the trial goes ahead, it might overlap with a general election due in 2009, increasing political instability in the country, where economic problems are already rife.
Zuma can take his plea for the charges to be dismissed to the appeal court and the constitutional court, should he fail today.
Jessie Duarte, a spokeswoman for the ruling ANC party, said Zuma would continue to fight the case. |
