Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's leasehath all too short a date;
Sometime too hot theeye of heaven shines,
And ofen is his gold complexion dimmed;
By chance or nature's changing course untrimmed;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st,
Nor shall death brag thou wand'rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st.
??? So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
??? So long lives this,and this gives life to thee.

4.lease:allotted time
? date:duration
5.the eye of heaven:i.e. the sun
7.fair from fair:beautiful from beauty
8.chance:fortune
? course:the normal course of change in the natural world
? untrimmed:stripped of beauty.
10.thou ow'st:thou ownest(=you own,you posses)
11.nor...shade:nor shall death boast that you roam about in his darkness,i.e. you shall not fall under the threat of Death.
14.this:i.e. this poem.

|
