In stark contrast to developed economies, where the printing of words on dead wood is a sunset industry and print journalists are a dying breed, the Chinese newspaper industry is in rude health.

Total newspaper circulation in China in 2010 was expected to rise 14 per cent from the year earlier to more than 50bn – the highest in the world – according to figures from the General Administration of Press and Publication. That contrasted with a slight decrease in newspaper circulation in Britain and a five per cent drop in the US between March 2010 and September 2010, the Chinese state media reported.

Strong growth in the domestic market is helping state-controlled publications expand overseas as part of an official Chinese Communist Party propaganda campaign to improve its image abroad and boost the country’s “soft power”.

As part of that campaign the English-language government mouthpiece “China Daily” is now available on newsstands in the US and UK.

But even as Chinese publications expand internationally, global newspaper owners cannot look to China for salvation.

Under Chinese laws, all publications must be under the direct censorship control of the Party and all major editorial operations are supposed to be owned by one arm of the state or another.

Thanks to Beijing’s paranoid censorship regime, the boom in quantity has not necessarily improved the quality of the Chinese press.

Many publications are still supported by mandatory subscriptions and circulations to “work units”. Some are probably never read at all.

Rising circulations doesn’t mean life for Chinese reporters is getting any easier either.

The Committee to Protect Journalists said there were 10 more journalists in prison by the end of 2010 than at the end of the previous year, bringing the total to 34.

And those are just the ones they know about.
