A special plane landed in Beijing Wednesday morning, carrying home the body of Chinese UN observer Du Zhaoyu, who was killed last week during Israel's air raid on Lebanon.
Du's coffin, covered with Chinese and UN flags, was carried down the plane by eight Chinese soldiers.
His widow Li Lingling, who had flown to Israel to bring Du's body home, followed the coffin, holding a framed picture of Du in hands.
Du's parents and his baby son, who had his two-year-old birthday on Monday, waited at the airport.
The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Assistant to Chief of the General Staff Zhang Qinsheng and China's Assistant Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai led an array of Chinese military and government officials, standing underneath the plane.
Over 100 Chinese army officers with uniforms and their service caps in hands stood at attention as Du's coffin was carried from plane to a hearse.
The 34-year-old Du, a Lt. Colonel, was killed in an Israeli raid on a UN post in southern Lebanon on July 25, which also killed three other UN observers from Finland, Austria and Canada, respectively.
Israel has expressed deep sorrow and regret over the incident, but denied it was deliberate.
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said on Sunday that questions still surrounding the deaths of the four UN military observers in Lebanon must be answered.
