The ranks of the super rich in China continue to grow — there are a third more renminbi billionaires this year than last, according to today’s new China Rich List, from the Hurun Report — but philanthropy has slowly begun to thin the ranks as well, says Hurun.

Yu Pengnian, a property tycoon who ranked number 432 in last year’s list, fell off the chart altogether this year because he gave all of his money away. In April, the octogenarian Shenzhen real estate and hotel entrepreneur donated over $1bn to charity.

“This will be my last donation. I have nothing more to give away,” he said at the time. “It will all be for charity, no part of it will be inherited by anyone, no part will be used to do business or for investments,” he was quoted as saying in People’s Daily.

Out of 1,363 renminbi billionaires on the list this year (up from 24 just ten years ago), there is a growing trend toward philanthropy, the Hurun Report says. “There is a trend of the Hurun Rich List to turn their ‘new money’ into ‘old money’, to be seen to be making their wealth more discerning, more sophisticated,” says Rupert Hoogewerf, publisher of the list. “Being a good corporate citizen is seen as key to succeed in this.”

Cao Dewang, at number 65, sold $550m worth of shares in his flagship Fuyao Glass to be in a better position to set up a philanthropic foundation, the report says, adding that China’s first generation of entrepreneurs have been quick to cough up to build schools in rural areas, and donate to disaster relief, most recently for the Qinghai Earthquake.

It might take more to impress Warren Buffett and Bill Gates - who recently came on a mission to China, to teach the Chinese how to give — but it is a start. “Philanthropy is still a young sector in China,” says Hoogewerf. “Much of the corporate citizenship in China is not as visible as it might be in the West.”
