No protests were held during the Beijing Olympics because all the issues raised by would-be protesters were "resolved" ahead of time, a senior Chinese Olympic security official has said.
Of the protest applications that were received, most were quickly "abandoned" after the problem had been addressed by the "relevant authorities", Liu Shaowu, head of security for Beijing games organising committee, was quoted as saying on Thursday.
"Apart from there being some applications whose content was against the law, most of the applications related to resolving specific issues," the semi-official China News Service quoted Liu as saying.
"After consultations between relevant authorities and the applicants, all the specific issues were appropriately resolved, and the applicants themselves abandoned their applications."
The Chinese authorities had designated three special protest zones in Beijing for the duration of the Beijing Olympics, but were widely condemned by human rights groups for not allowing a single protest to be held during the games.
With both the Olympic and Paralympic games now over, Chinese officials say the three zones have been closed down. |
