Passenger jet crashes in Russia

A Boeing-737 jet has crashed near Russia's city of Perm in the central Ural mountains and all 87 people on board were believed to have been killed, Russian news agencies reported.

The airliner, operated by Russia's Aeroflot airline, was on an internal flight from Moscow to the Siberian city of Perm when it crashed on Sunday.

"We have found the aircraft. It came down within the city limits (in Perm) in a patch of waste ground." Interfax news agency quoted Emergencies Ministry spokeswoman Irina Andrianova as saying.

"According to the latest information, the airplane fell into a ravine near the city limits. There were 82 passengers plus a baby and five crew on board, and by preliminary information, they are all dead," investigator Vladimir Markin told the RIA Novosti news agency.

"The Trans-Siberian Railway was damaged due to the accident," Markin said.

"The airplane took off from Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport at 0112 on Sunday (2112 Saturday GMT), but as it was landing [in Perm], at the height of 1,800 metres we lost contact with it," Andrianova said.

She added that the jet crashed into a swamp at around 3:40 a.m.(2340 GMT) on Sunday.

Andrianova said there were deaths on the ground or damge, and that there was no indication of a terrorist attack.

A rescue team was reported flying out of Moscow to assist local rescuers and Investigators were working to determine what caused the crash.
