Gordon Brown opens school in Port Glasgow

The Prime Minister travelled to the Clydeside town of Port Glasgow to officially open the town’s new £10 million Newark Primary School today.

Headteacher Lillian Hasson was in the same year as Mr Brown when both were pupils at Kirkcaldy High School in Fife.

During his visit to the school the PM chatted with some of the pupils before carrying out the official opening.

In his speech he praised the school and commended those responsible for raising educational performance standards in the area.

The PM said:

“This is an example of the whole community coming together to build an extraordinary new facility for generations of our children.

“The purpose of education is so people can bridge the gap between what they are and what they have it in themselves to become. The purpose of education is so that everyone can rise as far as their talents can take them.

“I am proud that what we have been trying to do over the last 10 years is to increase the level of investment in every child in every school in every part of the country.”
