I adore accessories. If it isn’t particularly functional, it is popping straight into my bag, obviously in a nonshoplifting fashion. Necklaces, Alice bands, random lace, bangles, hoops, silk scarves: they are all so pretty in the shop, and instantly update and transform my day-time uniform. Also, it is very difficult to completely muck up accessories. When other girls savagely rip your character apart based on what you are wearing, they rarely attack your bracelet.

It is generally that jumper their collective grandmother would wear. My predilection for bits of nonsense has sadly enabled me to collect drawers full of these items. And reflect on them. A lot. Thus, I give you my predictions and recommendations for 2006. Chains - now. Dear me, there are chains popping up everywhere. They are very trendy at the moment, while people are still staring in a disoriented fashion at their huge tribal necklaces.

Chains come in all shapes and sizes, from huge plastic openwork examples to the more horsey thick brass chains. Like the brief yet immensely pleasurable trend of cowboy boots, chains must be indulged in now, before the winter ends. Who wants to punt with eleven pounds of jewelry around their neck, anyhow? Thin, delicate necklaces - in a few months. In direct contrast to my previous recommendation, jewelry to be seen in this summer will be more delicate than in seasons past.

The kukui nut frenzy is over, and the well dressed girl will search gently through her jewelry box for the modest gifts she received when she left primary school. Little gold chains with tiny charms subtly reference the minimalist nineties while respecting the embellished 00’s, and these thin necklaces warm instead of overwhelm your newly bronze skin. Alice Bands - now There is something so coy about a prim and proper Alice Band restraining a head of tousled, untamed tresses.

Perhaps it is simply my hair that behaves in a rather Medusa like fashion, and thus needs the bit of restraint an Alice Band provides. Even if your hair is not a perpetual bad day exemplar, however, the combination of a primary school accessory with dead sexy bedroom hair is precious. The key to working this accessory is selecting an Alice Band that is as old school as possible; modern day reinterpretations such as thin wiry bands or faux suede examples scream frumpy.

Collars - this autumn We have pushed through the cycle of huge necklaces of beads, tassels, and ribbon-covered balls that defined last summer. In the winter, we turned to heavy chains as an antidote to the breezy peasant looks that plagued us the previous year. Warmer days saw us indulging in delicate necklaces with Pimms. Where will we look next? I predict that collars, from fur to beaded, will be a key accessory this autumn.

I don’t mean the stiff lace types that the Virgin Queen was generally spotted sporting; rather, wide necklaces that offset our collar bones and light up our faces. |
