新婚少妇梅琳达-戈登拥有一项超人的特质，能与死者的灵魂进行交流，经常有鬼魂向她求助。梅琳达运用自己的特质帮它们向活着的人传递重要信息，因为这些信息有时太过深奥难懂，也为梅琳达带来许多麻烦，甚至让她遭到非议和质疑。但是当梅琳达发现自己不仅帮了那些迷失的灵魂，也会对在世的人给予援手时，她知道自己的特异功能不是负担而是一笔财富。

《鬼语者》不但有着“悬疑”和“催泪”两大法宝，更有一个以漂亮而闻名好莱坞的女主演，她就是曾和成龙共同主演《燕尾服》的“傻姑娘”詹妮弗·拉芙·海维特。海维特在行里一向被称为“花瓶”，但随着年龄的增长，她的演技还是有所增强。《鬼语者》中海维特扮演了一个知性美女，受到了很多观众的肯定，该剧的收视人数就是证明。
