欲考唐老师博士,先看此文:
First of all, I thank you for your kind interest in my work.
Before you actually apply through the formal channel, here are the things you should
do. Please read these instructions carefully, and follow them.
First, I do not normally take doctoral students whom I do not know well enough.
Hence, I suggest you send me 2-3 pieces of your best writing (either published or
unpublished) plus your CV so that I can take a look.
Second, you should write a brief research proposal on what you want to focus or any
area that you think you will be interested in the future. The proposal must include
some discussion on the existing literature and how you want to proceed. The topic
should be of both theoretical and practical value. The proposal should be 5-8 pages
long, within 3000-4500 Chinese characters.
Third, since I strongly believe that every doctoral student must have some potential
to be a good scholar, I hold all my doctoral students to a very high standard (much
higher than most professors you have ever known). So mentally, you have to be really
prepared. Even if you can become my student, I will not hesitate to fail my students
if they do not meet my minimal standard. (I normally will ask a doctoral student to
spend 4 years). Of course, this applies only after you becoming one of my students.
Fourth, you should be no more than 32 years old when you apply. If you think you
are outstanding, I can stretch the age limit to 35 years old, but no more than that.
I also warn you that if you do not follow the above procedure, I will not take you
even if you have passed the coming entry examination.
I will let you know whether you can apply for studying under my supervision after I
have read your stuff.
Lastly, I wish you all the best of luck in pursuing your career, no matter what you do.
Even if my decision is negative, it does not mean that you cannot achieve something
important in your life. Every one of us can contribute to social welfare, in some way,
as long as we care about others’ welfare and work hard toward it.
Obviously, we do not need so many doctors.
Best,
Shiping Tang |
