评《新编英语教程》第五册及其参考用书存在的问题

《新编英语教程》第五册[1] 及其练习参考答案[2]上海外语教育出版社推出的“十五”国家级规划教材之一，是目前我国各高校英语专业高年级普遍采用的教材。这套教材体现了迄今为止我国外语界在英语专业教材建设方面的最新成果，其优点是有目共睹的，不在本文讨论范围之内。

本文主要指出教材中存在的美中不足之处，以便教材得到进一步完善。若有不妥之处，敬请各位专家批评指正。

首先，与当今众多出版物一样，本套教材中也存在一些印刷方面的错误。

笔者在第七到第十二单元中就发现存在以下几处错误：

1. …but using the words given in capital letters（《教程》，p.107）应
将but 改为by。

2. The process or technique of determining the traits or attitudes of  
a whole by collecting and analyzing data from a representative segment  
of it（《教程》，p.115） 这句的“attitudes”根据上下文应改为“attributes”。

3. In a strange tune chanted the men and in quick light rustle of women’s  
voices came the REFRAIN.（《教程》，p.132）这句的“chanted”与“the men”之间
漏掉了一个“by”。

4. As population growth sends the numbers of inhabitants _______, the  
city shows every sign of overcrowdedness.（《教程》，p.147）这里的“numbers”
多了一个“s”，应改为“number”。

5. There is no social problem it is more incumbent upon us to understand  
than this of the role of custom.（《教程》， p.172, p.173）这句在语法结构上存在问题，应该将it改为which。

6. This term I elected the anthropology course because it ______ no  
previous knowledge of the subject.（《教程》，p. 178）这句中的“elected”应改为“selected”。

7. How do words like lanquished （《教程》，p.235）应该改为“languished”。

第二，答案错误。

第七单元（Unit Seven）Language Work, IV第9题：Many geologists and  
anthropologists possess a wealth of evidence to indicate that human  
beings rose from lower forms of life over a long period of time. A.  
proof   B. data  C. testimony   D. reference 显而易见，上述四个答案中与“ evidence”意思最相近的是“proof”。正确答案应为A，而不是参考书上所提供的答案B（参考书，p.36）。

第三，结构问题。

作为教材，其语法结构应该规范，用法要正确。但本套教材却存在此类问题。如，This difference seems most noticeable between the modern throw-away-oriented girls who,  
on the one hand, are delighted in replacing their out-of-date Barbies  
for up-to-date ones, and their old-fashioned counterparts on the other  
hand, who, like their mothers and grandmothers, are reluctant to part  
with their dear little dolls until they are timeworn and broken/ until
they fall apart.（参考书，p.37）这个长句里，由于“on the one hand” 与“on the other hand”位置不一致，平行结构不能给人一目了然之感。改进方法有两种，要么把“on the one hand”提至who之前，要么把“on the other hand”放到后一个“who”之后。另外，“are delighted in replacing”应改为“are delighted to replace”。根据《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》（Oxford Advanced Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary），“delighted”后接三种结构 at sth/to do sth/that…，没有接-ing的用法。这种用法经常被用来测试学生，所以教材就更不能犯此类错误。

第四，历史背景知识错误。

本套教材的一大特点是为课文提供了相当丰富的背景材料，把语言学习与文化背景知识学习紧密结合起来。但在解释《独立宣言》时，却出现了一个历史性错误。《新编英语教程》对《独立宣言》的注释如下：“full and formal declaration adopted July 4, 1776, by  
representatives of the thirteen North American colonies announcing  
the separation of those colonies from Great Britain and making  
them into the United States.”(可译为：北美十三个殖民地的代表于1776年7月4日采纳的完整而正式的宣言，宣布这些殖民地将脱离大不列颠，组成美国。)根据我国美国史学界的最新研究成果，《独立宣言》并不是美利坚合众国诞生的标志，当时的十三个殖民地组成的是“联合十三邦”。[3] 《独立宣言》的正式标题为“The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America”（笔者建议译为：《美洲十三联合邦之一致宣言》），从大小写和《宣言》的内容的可以看出，这里的“united States of America”并不是一个专有名词，与后来的“the United States”不是同一回事。


第五，关于paraphrase练习的答案。

据《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》，“paraphrase”是“express the meaning of (a piece  
of writing, statement, etc) in different words, esp in order to make it  
easier to understand”，其主要目的是为了把一个复杂的句子解释得通俗易懂，但参考书提供的许多参考答案却是比原文还要复杂。笔者听一些学生反映，用于“paraphrase”的句子比原文还要难懂。如， “It is no use doing what you like; you have got to like what you do.” （《教程》，P.165）这句话无论从结构还是用词上都浅显易懂，但在参考答案中却被解释得如同天书：It is no good believing that you are in a position to enjoy at a moment’s  
notice any pastime which happens to catch your fancy; pleasure comes from  
exerting one’s talents in a hobby suited to one’s circumstances.（参考书， P.55）
