在报道中，galaxy cluster指的就是“星系团”。 galaxy在天文学上指的是“星系、银河系”，比如：a distant galaxy（遥远的星系）；galaxy也可以指“一群（杰出或著名的人物）”。cluster可以表示“团、群、组”，例如：There was a little cluster of admirers around the actress. （女演员周围拥着一小群崇拜者。）cluster还可以作动词，意思是“（使）集中、聚集”，例如：Most of the foreign embassies are clustered in this area.（大多数的外国使馆都聚集在这一区。）
星系团（galaxy cluster）是由十几个、几十个、乃至上千个galaxy（星系）组成。其中，每一个星系称为星系团的member galaxy（成员星系）。星系团可以通过astronomic telescope（天文望远镜）来观测。发现宇宙空间的大量星系团不仅可以用于研究星系团内的dark matter（暗物质）和热气体分布，还可以研究星系团的碰撞和并合过程，研究large scale structure of the universe（宇宙的大尺度结构）。
